A History, A Present, A Future, and A Goal
Of the 77 neighborhoods in Chicago, few can compare with Douglas. The neighborhood has existed for over 150 years, spawned countless forms and denizens of both visual and musical art, inventors entrepreneurs and activists, and intense discrimination against its black populace. Today the neighborhood struggles against issues like crime and education, and much work remains to ensure the area once dubbed "The Black Metropolis" rises again. This site is dedicated to shining a light on Douglas, as a neighborhood that is both unique in its triumphs and challenges and for its unique celebration of its blackness.
